Sun Microsystems Inc - Redknee Inc: Fueling the Adoption of New Mobile Services - with Sun Microsystems
New York, New York, Nov 01, 2001 (Market News Publishing via COMTEX) -- Redknee Inc., a leading provider of mobile applications platforms for 2G+ and 3G mobile networks, announces its 'Virtual Application World' (VAW) wireless application facility in Toronto, Canada. Through the VAW, Redknee Inc. is using Sun Microsystems, Inc. as its primary hardware and software vendor to provide an open application environment for both software developers and mobile network operators. Third-party application developers are able to access the VAW using Redknee's Open Services Architecture (OSA) solutions and industry standard APIs such as Parlay and JAIN™ technology. "Redknee's VAW and OASIS™ services architecture, running on the Sun™ platform, help application developers speed time to deployment for network aware services," said Manish Bhuptani, group manager, Network Services at Sun Microsystems, Inc. "By leveraging key Java™ technologies and the open, scalable Solaris™ 8 Operating Environment, Redknee provides the open application environment that developers need to deliver next generation mobile applications."
As part of the VAW facility, Redknee makes available its OASIS (Open Applications Services Interface System) services architecture for mobile application development, which incorporates key technologies from Sun including Java technology, Enterprise JavaBeans™ components (EJB™), JDMK, the Java 2 platform, Micro Edition (J2ME™) and JAIN. Redknee solutions run on the Solaris 8 Operating Environment and a variety of Sun servers, from the ruggedized Netra servers to Sun Enterprise and Sun Fire enterprise servers. To receive access to the VAW, third party developers register with Redknee's VAW facility in Toronto.
The benefits of Redknee's VAW and OASIS services architecture are significant. Consumers ultimately benefit because they can choose from a wider range of mobile services. Third party application developers are able to introduce 'network aware' applications significantly faster using open API's such as Parlay-based interfaces. Wireless carriers are able to introduce a wider range of valuable, differentiating mobile services in a much shorter timeframe.
Commenting on Redknee's mobile services architecture is Alberto Socorro, Communications Manager for Accenture, "We are convinced that Redknee provides the best services architecture for the next generation of mobile telephony in Spain." VAW was used to expedite integration and testing for this major 2.G+ network deployment.
"Redknee's VAW has sped up mobile application deployments by as much as 50 percent", said Jeff Popoff, Business Development, Redknee Inc. "Sun's leading Java technologies and robust platform help our customers achieve these results."
Redknee's VAW fosters a community of world-class partners, with Sun Microsystems as its leading hardware and software vendor. Already deployed in networks around the world, Redknee's OASIS services architecture leverages Parlay Group's open Application Programming Interface (API) specifications and 3GPP's Open Services Architecture (OSA).
