Nortel Networks, Redknee.com showcase In-Vehicle Third Generation Wireless Services

PARIS - Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSE: NT] and Redknee.com*, a developer of wireless Internet and UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) applications, announced a joint activity demonstrating on-going innovation in the delivery of Wireless Internet services and applications for third generation (3G) wireless networks.

Nortel Networks and Redknee.com have jointly developed AIME* (Advanced Intelligent Mobile Entertainment), a prototype in-vehicle multimedia solution that delivers streamed wireless content and personalized information into intelligent vehicles. The solution currently operates on a Nortel Networks 3G trial network deployed in Paris, and is being demonstrated to wireless operators and UMTS license applicants.

AIME is demonstrating live applications and services integrated into a standard mini-van to show how content and applications can be adapted to personalization and location. AIME takes advantage of Nortel Networks expertise and leadership position in end-to-end 3G network solutions, and Redknee.com's system, software and Internet applications expertise.

It is expected that, with the advent of 3G networks, in-vehicle multimedia applications will find an increasing market demand. This in-vehicle solution will provide a wide range of user-defined content and services, including telematics, infotainment, mobile e-commerce, messaging, news services, traffic and weather information, and location-based advertising.

"Nortel Networks is committed to bringing complete, end-to-end network solutions to the booming Wireless Internet marketplace," said Doug McGregor, vice-president, GSM/UMTS, Nortel Networks.
"Beyond the radio access and core network aspects, today's announcement of AIME's capabilities as an in-vehicle integrated wireless multimedia applications solution is a further step toward the successful launch of 3G networks," McGregor said. "The joint activity with Redknee.com is an example of advanced Wireless Internet services and applications."

"Time to market delivery of innovative new applications is critical to the business success of 3G and UMTS service providers," Duncan Ratcliffe, president, Redknee.com. "Combining Nortel Networks Wireless Internet portfolio with Redknee's intelligent Wireless Internet solutions will allow both companies to open up new capabilities by making the Internet mobile aware. With the joint development of AIME with Nortel Networks, Redknee.com is positioning itself to deploy a suite of intelligent wireless services for a wide range of 3G-enabled terminals."
